Interviewer: Hello, Mr. Huangfu Junjie, it is a pleasure to have this interview with you. I see that you worked at Zhejiang Television Station and became the Deputy Secretary-General of the Zhejiang Television Artists Association’s Hosting Professional Committee. How did you transition from being a broadcaster to a host?
Huangfu Junjie: Hello, thank you very much for inviting me for this interview. I worked at Zhejiang Television Station for nearly 10 years, during which time I continuously studied and improved myself, trying to be involved in different TV programs. During this time, I accumulated rich experience and skills, which made me more confident and capable. I was also fortunate to have had some hosting jobs before this opportunity came, including program planning, hosting, and production. These experiences allowed me to better understand the skills and abilities required for TV program production and hosting, making me more confident and ready to face greater challenges. I believe that my experience and skills in the television industry will help me achieve greater success in my future career.
Interviewer: Your journey seems to have taken you from Zhejiang Television Station to pursuing a Master’s degree in the United States. Could you share with us the motivations behind this transition and how it has influenced your career?
Huangfu Junjie: I recognized the immense value of gaining international exposure and immersing myself in a different cultural and educational environment. By studying in the United States, particularly at New York University known for its esteemed communication programs, I had the opportunity to learn from industry experts and collaborate with talented peers from diverse backgrounds.
My decision to pursue higher education in the United States was fueled by the belief that this experience would not only expand my knowledge base but also provide me with fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to public relations and corporate communication. I was determined to bring back these insights to the Zhejiang Radio and Television Group, contributing to the organization’s growth and success.
Interviewer: What was your biggest gain during your studies and work?
Huangfu Junjie: I think my biggest gain was seeing things from different perspectives. Growing up in China, we received similar education and cultural backgrounds, but abroad, we can be exposed to more diverse cultures and ways of thinking, which is very beneficial for our growth and development. At the same time, I also believe that learning to try and accept new things and cultures can help us better adapt to different environments and people.
For example, when I was studying abroad, I met many classmates from different countries. We would have group discussions in class, sharing our opinions and experiences. Through our exchanges, I learned about the cultural customs, educational systems, and political systems of different countries. This knowledge not only broadened my horizons but also helped me better understand and respect other cultures.
In addition, living and studying abroad also requires adapting to different lifestyles and social rules. I learned to live independently, manage myself, and solve problems. These skills are very helpful for my future career development and social life. Therefore, I believe that by exposing ourselves to different cultures and learning different concepts, we can become more open-minded, confident, and mature.

Interviewer: After working for several years with some achievements, you chose to quit and study in the United States. Can you tell us about your thoughts and gains at that time?
Huang Fu Jun Jie: My thought was to expand my horizons, learn more knowledge and skills, and better serve my career. I worked at Zhejiang Television Station for almost 10 years and felt that I needed more challenges and growth. I chose to quit because I wanted a fresh start, a new opportunity, to pursue my long-desired career goal. During my study and life in the United States, I was exposed to more diverse cultures and ways of thinking, and gained a deeper understanding of the knowledge and skills in the field of public relations and corporate communication. These experiences and gains are very helpful for my future career development and personal growth.
Interviewer: I heard that you started a Chinese learning community, ChineseUp, while studying for a master’s degree at New York University. You also collaborated with various Chinese restaurants to promote Chinese culture, which sounds very interesting and meaningful. Can you tell us about the origin and goals of this community?
Huang Fu Jun Jie: When I first arrived in New York, I found that many foreigners had a strong interest in learning Chinese and Chinese culture, but it was difficult for them to find a suitable place to learn Chinese and understand more about Chinese culture. Therefore, I decided to start a Chinese learning community to meet their needs. The community not only provided a platform for learning Chinese and understanding Chinese culture but also combined Chinese language learning and the promotion of Chinese culture through cooperation with local Chinese restaurants. We organized various activities, such as Chinese corners, free of charge, and provided foreigners with more opportunities to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture. Through this community’s efforts, we hoped to encourage more people to learn Chinese and to understand and love Chinese culture.
In addition to providing a platform for foreigners to learn about Chinese culture, our community also provided more publicity opportunities for Chinese restaurants. Through our cooperation with Chinese restaurants, we not only allowed foreigners to have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture but also provided more opportunities for Chinese restaurants to promote their dishes and Chinese culture. Through this approach, we can create a win-win situation.
In this process, we have also seen many interesting things. For example, language and cultural exchanges between Chinese and foreigners allow us to better understand each other’s cultures and promote friendship. At the same time, discussions and explorations of Chinese restaurant dishes have allowed us to deepen our understanding of Chinese food culture and increase our interest and love for Chinese cuisine.
In summary, our community is committed to providing a platform for foreigners to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture while providing more publicity opportunities for Chinese restaurants. Through various activities, we hope to promote the exchange and integration of Chinese and Western cultures and encourage more people to understand and love Chinese culture.
Interviewer: It sounds very interesting and meaningful. How important do you think learning Chinese is for foreigners?
Huangfu Junjie: Learning Chinese is very important for foreigners because it can help them better understand China’s history, culture, and society. Through learning Chinese, foreigners can understand China’s rich cultural heritage, such as traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy, and music. In addition, learning Chinese can help foreigners better understand Chinese characters, a unique writing and cultural system.
Moreover, Chinese is a very complex language, and learning Chinese can help foreigners exercise their language skills. By learning Chinese, foreigners can improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities. These language skills are very important for their international employment opportunities and communication abilities. Learning Chinese can also help foreigners better understand Chinese business culture, which can help them better communicate with Chinese business partners.
In summary, learning Chinese is very beneficial. It can help foreigners better understand China’s history, culture, and society, improve their language skills, increase their employment opportunities, and communication abilities. Therefore, we strongly recommend foreigners to learn Chinese.

Through this community, we can provide more publicity opportunities for Chinese restaurants. Through our cooperation with Chinese restaurants, we not only allow foreigners to have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture but also provide more opportunities for Chinese restaurants to promote their dishes and Chinese culture. Through this approach, we create a win-win situation.
In summary, this community provides a platform for foreigners to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture while providing more publicity opportunities for Chinese restaurants. Through various activities, we hope to promote the exchange and integration of Chinese and Western cultures and encourage more people to understand and love Chinese culture.
